Dresses!

I don't know how it happened but I now know what to do next. Dresses. Last year I did a series of dress paintings that were fun to do and well received. I stopped when I felt I had explored the idea as much as I could and it was starting to feel stale. Out of the blue the dresses have been coming back to me. Not the actual paintings I sold....but they have been coming up in random thoughts and conversations. All totally unrelated experiences. There are no coincidences are there? So I'm dusting off my dress templates and seeing what they would like to do next.

What next?

I am feeling as though I may be coming to the end of the current series I am working on. I now have about nine pieces total....five larger and four smaller. This will be just the right amount for the two shows I have coming up. So now, I need to decide what to do next. In the past I have always jumped from one thing to something totally different. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not. One one hand experimentation is good. I love to challenge myself in this way. On the other...I want to be able to push myself in terms of my craft. Get to the next level. I'm not sure how to keep my work cohesive and experimental at the same time. Very tricky. I am thinking I want to re-explore texture. Perhaps with oil paint. I'm not sure yet.

Long time no blog.

Here are some pictures of a commission in progress. It is a whole family and I am, so far, rather pleased with how they are coming out. I think they are almost done in fact.

I have been quite busy both in and out of the studio. I learned this weekend that I have been accepted into the Fall Into The Arts Festival next month here in my home town...I am thrilled! Other than that I have been working on pieces for the other show I am in this fall, sponsored by the Junior Women's League of Loudoun and a commission. I am hoping to gain some more local exposure and maybe even sell some paintings. Wouldn't that be nice?!

Paintings for a show....in progress.

I am, for the first time in my art career, working on a group of pieces for a show. This is a terrific exercise for me. I am sticking to a certain criteria (in this case oil on canvas in a square format) with a certain theme. Having criteria gives me room to push myself further. See how far I can run with this. And, in the end, I will have some good pieces that hopefully people will buy.

Just getting started.

As I look over this blog during the short time its been alive I can see a style emerging. I've painted for a long time and I've sold a lot of art. But right now...this is the first time I see something cohesive. I like it.
